An Adult Moment
For months now America – and the world – has anxiously watched as Republican leaders in Washington take our nation closer to the brink of a national default in their effort to force the American people to accept their ideological agenda.
Recognizing the special responsibility of our nation to meet its obligations, over twenty years ago, President Ronald Reagan chose a very different path when presented with the need to prevent a default.
That Was An Adult Moment!
For the sake of the nation, it’s time to put politics aside and work together to reduce the deficit, create jobs, and protect the American dream – without jeopardizing the financial security of working families in the process.
Excerpt of Reagan Radio Address, 9/26/1987:
“Congress consistently brings the Government to the edge of default before facing its responsibility. This brinkmanship threatens the holders of government bonds and those who rely on Social Security and veterans benefits. Interest rates would skyrocket, instability would occur in financial markets, and the Federal deficit would soar. The United States has a special responsibility to itself and the world to meet its obligations. It means we have a well-earned reputation for reliability and credibility – two things that set us apart from much of the world.”
