Since the Start: 75 Years of Democratic Support for Social Security
Democratic Members of Congress took to the floor of the House en masse today to voice their determination to strengthen and support Social Security in the face of repeated Republican attempts to undermine and dismantle the program. The Republican plan would jeopardize our nation’s fiscal stability by increasing federal borrowing by more than $1 trillion.
While Democrats stand strong in their support for Social Security, Republicans are once again putting the financial security of millions of America’s seniors at risk by threatening to dismantle and privatize the program. A leading Republican has put forward a plan that would cut Social Security retirement and survivor benefits for all workers. It would divert trillions of dollars into private accounts, subjecting workers’ basic retirement security to market volatility, and threaten the benefits of today’s seniors.
