Chairman Crowley Statement in Commemoration of Juneteenth
(Washington, DC) – House Democratic Caucus Chairman Joe Crowley (D-NY) issued the following statement in commemoration of Juneteenth:
“Today, as we celebrate 152 years since the news of President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation finally reached enslaved Americans in Galveston, Texas, we reflect on our nation’s struggle during this dark chapter of our history, as well as our triumph over the injustice of slavery.
“This is also a time to look forward and recognize those who continue the fight for equality, freedom, and justice. As we celebrate Juneteenth in Queens, the Bronx, and across the country, we recommit ourselves to the work that must still be done and our tireless pursuit of a more perfect union.”
