Chairman Crowley Statement on Resolution Reaffirming America’s Commitment to NATO Alliance

June 27, 2017

(Washington, DC) – House Democratic Caucus Chairman Joe Crowley (D-NY) issued the following statement after the House of Representatives confirmed the United States’ commitment to Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty, which says an attack on one NATO-member nation must be considered an attack on all member nations.

“President Trump’s refusal to acknowledge the mutual-aid clause of the North Atlantic Treaty when he was in Europe puts America’s security at risk and jeopardizes our standing as a world leader. This is why I joined my colleagues in the House of Representatives today to express our strong commitment to our NATO allies.

“However, that President Trump’s misguided foreign policy agenda is forcing the House to act as diplomatic emissaries to our allies is deeply troublesome. While I stand strongly behind our commitment to NATO, it demands questioning as to why Congress is forced to clean up the president’s mistakes when we should be focusing creating jobs, growing our economy, and expanding opportunities for working families.”
