Chairman Xavier Becerra On CHC Meeting With DHS Secretary Jeh Johnson

April 9, 2014

WASHINGTON, DC — Today, Congressman Xavier Becerra (CA-34), Chairman of the House Democratic Caucus and a senior member of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC), released the following statement after meeting with the Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson:

“I thank Secretary Johnson for a productive meeting concerning the Department of Homeland Security’s ongoing review of its immigration enforcement policies. During the meeting, my colleagues in the Congressional Hispanic Caucus and I discussed how the Department can best implement our immigration laws in a smart and humane way and without unnecessarily separating families. As the President’s deferred action program for America’s Dreamers demonstrated, well-conceived administrative action can produce more effective enforcement of our laws and provide urgent, sensible relief to hard-working immigrant families. We expect to continue our work with Secretary Johnson to secure effective administrative action.

“Still, temporary and limited relief is not a substitute for a permanent fix to our broken immigration system. The best solution for our country and our economy is for the House to vote on and pass comprehensive immigration reform. Every day House Republican leaders block a vote on H.R.15 or an alternative measure thousands of families are separated from their loved ones. Enough of the excuses. It’s time to vote.”
