Chairman Xavier Becerra on Departure of Johnson & Carter from House Immigration Reform Working Group

September 20, 2013

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congressman Xavier Becerra (CA-34), Chairman of the House Democratic Caucus, released the following statement on the departure of Congressman Sam Johnson (TX-03) and Congressman John Carter (TX-31) from the bipartisan immigration reform working group in the House of Representatives:

“Four years ago, I embarked on a journey with Congressman Sam Johnson, Congressman John Carter and a small band of Republicans and Democrats to find a bipartisan solution to fix our nation’s broken immigration system.

“Both Sam, a distinguished war veteran and a man of great integrity and resolve, and John, a former Texas state judge and a man of conviction and grit, have been indispensable in this worthwhile process. I have learned much from them as we worked together in good fait

“It saddens me that our working group is at an impasse and has been unable to introduce legislation. But that does not diminish the need for passing commonsense immigration reform in the House of Representatives.

“Today there exists a majority in the House of both Democrats and Republicans in support of fixing our broken immigration system. But it takes more than voicing support, it takes a vote. And we need Speaker Boehner to give us a vote. No more excuses, no more delays – it’s time to vote.”
