Chairman Xavier Becerra Hails Senate Passage of Employment Non-Discrimination Act

November 7, 2013

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congressman Xavier Becerra (CA-34), Chairman of the House Democratic Caucus, released the following statement after the Senate passed the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA) by a vote of 64 to 32:

“This is a question of basic fairness. America’s workers should be judged on their own performance, not the prejudice of others.

“The Employment Non-Discrimination Act would prohibit employers from firing, refusing to hire or discriminating against those employed or seeking employment on the basis of their perceived or actual sexual orientation or gender identity. These same kinds of protections already prohibit discrimination based on race, religion, gender, national origin, age and disability. Everyone deserves the same legal protections from discrimination, and ENDA’s passage in the Senate brings our country one step further to advancing equality for all.

“It’s time for real leadership in the House. We must complement the work done by Democratic and Republican Senators and act swiftly to ensure that every American receives equal protection under the law, regardless of what they look like or who they love.”
