Chairman Xavier Becerra on House Republican Draft Principles for Immigration Reform

January 31, 2014

WASHINGTON, DC — Today, Congressman Xavier Becerra (CA-34), Chairman of the House Democratic Caucus, released the following statement in response to the House Republican draft principles for immigration reform:

“I welcome House Republicans back to the debate to fix our broken immigration system. It’s been seven months since the Senate passed its bipartisan solution and four months since House Democrats introduced their complementary legislation (H.R. 15), which to date has garnered the bipartisan support of 196 Members of Congress.

“Our Republican colleagues should quickly translate their general statement of ‘principles’ on immigration policy into tangible legislation. Will their proposal match the bipartisan Senate bill and H.R. 15 in securing our borders, growing our economy, creating jobs and giving hard-working immigrant families a chance to earn the right to be full-fledged Americans?

“The clock is ticking. American workers and businesses have been waiting. And too many families continue to be torn apart by inaction to repair our nation’s flawed immigration laws. We look forward to seeing our Republican colleagues introduce legislation which puts meat on the immigration bone.”
