Chairman Xavier Becerra: Hunger Is Not A Game

September 19, 2013

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congressman Xavier Becerra (CA-34), Chairman of the House Democratic Caucus, issued the following statement after voting against legislation (H.R. 3102), that would slash nearly $40 billion from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP):

“Hunger is not a game.  The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is one of America’s strongest defenses against hunger and poverty.  And as 50 million Americans are struggling to put food on the table, House Republicans have voted to slash almost $40 billion from SNAP.  Nearly 4 million Americans, including children, seniors and veterans, would lose their food assistance if this callous legislation ever became law.

“Thankfully, this bill has no chance of passing the Senate or securing the signature of the President.  Congress should now get back to work on a responsible farm and nutrition bill that supports both our agricultural community and our children, veterans and seniors facing hunger today.”
