Chairman Xavier Becerra on President Obama’s Immigration Announcement

June 30, 2014

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congressman Xavier Becerra (CA-34), Chairman of the House Democratic Caucus, released the following statement after President Barack Obama announced his administration would be taking action in the coming months to address our broken immigration system:

“Our nation’s broken immigration system has separated families, undercut our economy, and exacerbated a humanitarian crisis at the southern border. And yet, for over a year, Speaker John Boehner and House Republican leaders have dragged their feet and refused to act on immigration reform, ignoring calls from their own members and their own constituents.

“I applaud the President for announcing that he will take action to fix our immigration system where he has the authority to do so. But, while these actions provide some relief, there is no substitute for a permanent legislative solution. The American public overwhelmingly supports a comprehensive solution to our broken immigration system. It’s time for House Republicans to do things the American way instead of the Tea Party way.”
