Chairman Xavier Becerra On Preview Of President Obama’s Budget

February 22, 2014

LOS ANGELES, CA — Today, Congressman Xavier Becerra (CA-34), Chairman of the House Democratic Caucus and Ranking Member of the Social Security Subcommittee, released the following statement on the White House’s preview of President Obama’s budget for fiscal year 2015:

“President Obama has called on Congress to make this a year of action. One important component in meeting that challenge is passing a sensible, responsible budget. I applaud the President for his willingness to negotiate with Republicans and search for common ground. I’m confident that the President’s forthcoming budget proposal will serve as an excellent blueprint for Congress moving forward and will focus on building an economy that works for all Americans.

“In one key area, the President’s budget will protect Social Security benefits that millions of hard working Americans paid for. Any proposal cutting Social Security, like the misguided Chained CPI scheme, would hit those who can least afford it the hardest: seniors, veterans, disabled workers, and women.

We can make the tough choices necessary to bring our fiscal house in order without cutting the Social Security benefits that Americans have earned. But that job becomes tough if some politicians insist on billing our seniors on Social Security for the costs of the Bush tax cuts benefitting the rich and two unpaid-for wars.”
