Chairman Xavier Becerra on Senate Republicans Shutting Down Appointment of Colleague Mel Watt to FHFA

October 31, 2013

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congressman Xavier Becerra (CA-34), Chairman of the House Democratic Caucus, released the following statement after Senate Republicans used a partisan filibuster to block the confirmation of Congressman Mel Watt to serve as the next Director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA):

“What a sad day for the Senate. A minority of forty one Senators just shut down the confirmation process of a supremely qualified individual to serve as our country’s next Director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency. Congressman Mel Watt has more than 40 years of experience serving as a real estate attorney and as a veteran of the House Financial Services Committee. Mel and I have been colleagues for 20 years. We served together on the House Judiciary Committee. He is the right candidate for the job.

“Unfortunately, in a virtually unprecedented move, Senate Republicans ignored his qualifications, blocked his appointment and put their ideological demands before the good of our country. I urge these reckless Senators to drop their blanket partisan objections to President Obama’s nominees, especially those who are to lead an agency that is responsible for helping American homeowners who are still struggling to recover from the foreclosure crisis. The American people deserve better. Enough of the procedural tricks, it’s time for Senate Republicans to do what’s best for the millions of Americans who believe in the dream of owning a home.”
