Chairman Xavier Becerra On Senate Vote To Advance Emergency Unemployment Insurance

January 7, 2014

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congressman Xavier Becerra (CA-34), Chairman of the House Democratic Caucus, released the following statement after the Senate vote to advance an extension of emergency unemployment insurance for over one million Americans:

“I am encouraged that today the Senate cleared the first procedural hurdle on a bipartisan vote towards passage of emergency unemployment insurance. But getting this vital measure to the President’s desk for his signature is far from certain. House Republicans must drop their blanket obstruction to extending jobless insurance coverage to our fellow Americans.

“Kicking Americans who lost their jobs through no fault of their own while they’re down is not going to help put them back to work. Unemployment insurance is a vital lifeline for millions of workers who paid for it while they were employed but are having difficulty finding a job today because of the lasting economic harm caused by the Great Recession.

“I hope the new year ushers in a bipartisan spirit where our Republican colleagues will work with House Democrats to help more Americans find work, grow our economy and strengthen the middle class.”
