Chairman Xavier Becerra: Time To Build Together On Strong June Jobs Report

July 3, 2014

WASHINGTON, DC — Today, Congressman Xavier Becerra (CA-34), Chairman of the House Democratic Caucus, released the following statement after the Department of Labor released the jobs report for June 2014 showing 288,000 new jobs:

“There’s an especially good reason to celebrate this Fourth of July: 288,000 more Americans at work feeling good about their new jobs.

“Our economy continues to grow and expand despite the political headwinds that President Obama confronts. The President has worked with American businesses to produce 52 consecutive months of job growth.  The result: 9.7 million more private sector jobs and an unemployment rate that has dropped to 6.1%, its lowest level in five years.

“But there’s more we could do if we could simply get past the shut-down, do-nothing politics waged in Congress. Economic experts agree that raising the minimum wage, guaranteeing equal pay for equal work, renewing emergency unemployment insurance, and fixing our broken immigration system would all go a long way toward strengthening America’s middle class families and boosting long term economic growth.  Why, for example, can’t our Republican colleagues join President Obama in replenishing the Highway Trust Fund so our cities and counties can move forward with local road and transit construction projects which put thousands more Americans to work and keep construction companies humming?

“It’s time for Republicans in Congress to stop playing politics at the expense of American working families and join President Obama’s jobs agenda to build an economy that works for all Americans, not just the wealthiest few.”
