Chairman Xavier Becerra Votes Against Bill That Risks Critical Patient Protections In The Affordable Care Act

April 29, 2014

WASHINGTON, DC — Today, Congressman Xavier Becerra (CA-34), Chairman of the House Democratic Caucus, released the following statement after voting against legislation (H.R. 4414) that would undermine critical protections in the Affordable Care Act:

“For those Americans who are truly ‘expatriates’, living and working abroad for U.S. companies the majority of the year, we all agree that they should have flexibility regarding their own healthcare coverage. However, this bill goes beyond flexibility and creates loopholes in the Affordable Care Act (ACA) that would undermine protections for millions of Americans and legal immigrants who live and work in the United States.

“This legislation would permit insurance companies to avoid their responsibility and sell sub-standard insurance policies to those Americans and thirteen million immigrant workers and their families who live and work in the United States. We cannot return to the bad-old-days when American families in need of decent healthcare were left unprotected against unscrupulous business practices.”
