Chairman Xavier Becerra Votes Against Denying The Child Tax Credit To Millions Of Working Families

July 25, 2014

WASHINGTON, DC — Today, Congressman Xavier Becerra (CA-34), Chairman of the House Democratic Caucus, released the following statement after voting against legislation (H.R. 4935) that leaves behind millions of hard-working families seeking the child tax credit:

“Eliminating tax credits that help families join or remain in the middle class is, at best, misguided and, at worst, just plain cruel. The House Republicans’ $825 billion deficit-increasing tax break package continues to reveal their values favoring tax breaks for corporations over strengthening middle class families.

“Is it really necessary to expand the child tax credit for wealthier households at the expense of 400,000 veteran and current military families who would lose all or part of their child tax credit? We don’t have to descend to this level. Instead of putting a target on the backs of hard-working, modest income families, Republicans should work with Democrats on commonsense proposals that jumpstart the middle class.”
