Chairman Xavier Becerra Votes Against Opening 8th Benghazi Investigation

May 8, 2014

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congressman Xavier Becerra (CA-34), Chairman of the House Democratic Caucus, released the following statement after voting against a resolution (H.Res. 567) that would create a select committee to investigate for the eighth time the Benghazi tragedy:

“It’s hard to trust what Speaker Boehner is doing with this new select committee. One month ago, the Speaker said that he saw ‘no reason… to create some select committee’ on Benghazi. After nearly 2 years, 7 investigations, 13 hearings, 50 briefings, 25,000 pagers of documents and millions of taxpayer dollars spent, the Speaker has flip-flopped and now opened yet another investigation into the Benghazi tragedy.

“Since learning of the Speaker’s proposal, House Democrats have called for a fair and balanced process. Unfortunately, after review of H. RES 567, it’s clear that the scope of the select committee is undefined, its costs are unlimited, its duration is indeterminate and its rules are rigged against a balanced, non-partisan fact-finding endeavor.

“What’s worse, House Republicans seem to be using the tragedy in Benghazi and the death of four Americans, to raise campaign money. The House of Representatives and its oversight responsibilities should not be used by our Republican colleagues as an arm of their partisan campaign operations. H. Res. 567 dishonors those who made the ultimate sacrifice and their families.

“Sadly, with this latest maneuver by House Republicans, the House of Representatives has descended to a new low, further discrediting this institution and our democracy”
