Chairman Xavier Becerra Votes Against Partisan Sideshow

May 7, 2014

WASHINGTON, DC — Today, Congressman Xavier Becerra (CA-34), Chairman of the House Democratic Caucus, issued the following statement after voting against the partisan House Resolution to hold former IRS official Lois Lerner in contempt of Congress:

“Once again, House Republicans have put politics ahead of governance. This contempt vote and the investigation that preceded it have only been about fanning the flames of conspiracy and never about collecting the facts. Now, House Republicans are toying with the constitutional right of an American citizen under the Fifth Amendment.

“Despite the fact that millions of taxpayer dollars have been spent, over 530,000 pages of documents examined, 39 officials questioned, not one shred of evidence has been uncovered to support Republicans’ claims of White House wrongdoing. And all along, Republicans ignored the use of tens of millions of secret, corporate dollars by Karl Rove and the Koch Brothers to pollute our democracy while claiming to operate as tax-exempt ‘social welfare’ organizations.

“Today’s vote will not only hold Ms. Lerner in contempt of Congress but it will set a dangerous precedent of stripping an American citizen of her Fifth Amendment rights. With so many important issues facing this nation, we can’t afford to waste time with these partisan political sideshows.”
