Chairman Xavier Becerra Votes To Protect Nutrition Services For Working Families

January 29, 2014

WASHINGTON, DC — Today, Congressman Xavier Becerra (CA-34), Chairman of the House Democratic Caucus, released the following statement after voting against legislation (H.R. 2642) that slashes nutrition services for working families and their children:

“The Farm bill was long in coming. Many of the reforms in the bill are a step in the right direction but now is not the time to put more American families in deeper economic distress. After refusing to extend long-term unemployment insurance for 1.6 million American workers and growing, this Republican-led Congress has now made it even harder for working families to feed their children. In America, if you work hard for a living, you shouldn’t have to stop at a food pantry on the way home from a full day of work to feed your children. Congress should be in the business of rewarding work, ensuring economic security, strengthening ladders of opportunity and creating a more prosperous future for everyone.”
