Chairman Xavier Becerra Votes Against “Out of Touch” Tea Party Republican Government Shutdown Bill

September 20, 2013

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congressman Xavier Becerra (CA-34), Chairman of the House Democratic Caucus, released the following statement after voting against legislation (H.J.Res. 59) that would lead to a government shutdown:

“Threatening to shut down the government unless your extreme ideological demands are met is no way to run the largest economy in the world. But that’s how out of touch some politicians in Washington are today.

“Unfortunately, it’s the middle class who will pay the price for this mindless political game of chicken. Not only would this bill lock in the reckless budget cuts that will cost our economy more than a million Americans jobs next year but it would also deny health care coverage to millions of Americans, defund the Children’s Health Insurance Program and wreak havoc on Medicare. And if that wasn’t enough, this bill would in effect direct the U.S. government to pay foreign creditors like China first before keeping our promise to render services for our retired and disabled veterans and our seniors on Social Security.

“Americans are fed up with the political obstruction and dysfunction in Congress. It’s time for Republicans to join Democrats to put more people back to work, grow our economy, and strengthen the middle class. It’s time to put country before party.”
