Chairman Xavier Becerra On Year Old Supreme Court Decision Which Weakened the Voting Rights of Americans

June 25, 2014

WASHINGTON, DC — Today, Congressman Xavier Becerra (CA-34), Chairman of the House Democratic Caucus, released the following statement on the one year anniversary of the Supreme Court decision in Shelby County v. Holder which weakened the Voting Rights Act:

“The right to vote is the foundation of our democracy. Last year, the Supreme Court backtracked on the decades of progress we had made to protect and strengthen our civil rights when it struck down a key section of the indispensable Voting Rights Act. Since then, more restrictive and discriminatory laws have been enacted in several states, putting American citizens’ right to vote at risk.

“Today, the House of Representatives has the opportunity to start restoring the full power of the ballot box and put the promise of democracy back in the hands of the American people. It’s time for the shutdown politics of this do-nothing Congress to end. It’s time for Congress to pass the Voting Rights Amendment Act to ensure that all Americans have equal access to the voting booth.”
