Larson Commends Dingell- Longest Serving House Member
February 11, 2009
WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman John B. Larson (CT-01), Chairman of the House Democratic Caucus, made the following remarks in honor of Congressman John Dingell (MI-15) becoming the longest serving member of the House of Representatives.
“As our country struggles with some of the greatest challenges in a generation, I am honored to have Congressman John Dingell by my side. As a student of history, the importance of this milestone is not lost on me. He has seen our nation through wars and recessions, innovations and triumphs. His steady hand and institutional knowledge will help guide us through today’s problems.
“John Dingell came to this body as a young veteran filling his father’s shoes. Now, he is a giant here in his own right, an institution and the Dean of the House. He has served the American people for 54 years, under 11 presidents. There are few with John Dingell’s track record of fighting fraud and waste in our government. Dingell has been a steadfast advocate for our environment as the author of the 1970 National Environmental Policy Act, the Clean Air Act and the Endangered Species Act. He has also worked tirelessly to protect consumers and help this country’s workers.
“Throughout his legislative career, Mr. Dingell has focused and has acted with purpose – a purpose to improve social conditions for not only his constituents, but for people across the nation. I have been privileged to gain insight and knowledge from working with him. Long after he leaves this institution, members will be learning from his experiences, his leadership and his example. I congratulate him on his many impressive achievements and on being the longest serving member of the House of Representatives.”
