House Passes Crime, Justice and Science Legislation
Washington, DC – Today, the House of Representatives passed a key piece of legislation to fund crime prevention and prosecution, as well as scientific innovation and research. Congressman John B. Larson (CT-01), Chairman of the House Democratic Caucus, said:
“This legislation invests in two of our nation’s top priorities – public safety and research and innovation. It lays a new foundation for long term prosperity and fiscal responsibility. Republicans who tried to stand in the way of its passage were just repeating a mantra we’ve become accustomed to from them – “NO.” They are trying to stall progress on the important work before this Congress.
“With this bill, we are investing in programs to keep our streets and citizens safe. To help local municipalities hire more than 7,000 new police officers, we included an additional $252 million for the incredibly successful Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) Program. We also significantly increased funding for the FBI in order to boost our national security efforts, help secure our borders, address the growing threat of cyber crime, and prosecute crimes like financial fraud.
“We also renew our commitment to our students and scientists with this legislation. To give American students the tools they need to succeed in a global job market, we invest in science, technology, engineering and math education. We renew our commitment to reducing global climate change with funding for research, and we invest $6.9 billion in the most promising scientific research happening across the country.
“At the same time we know that we must be fiscally responsible during these difficult times. So, our legislation cuts 11 programs that were underperforming and reduces funding for 13 others. This legislation invests in our priorities without leaving the bill for the next generation.”
