This morning, Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer and Rep. Chris Van Hollen went to the House Floor to simply ask for a vote on a bipartisan bill that passed the Senate 89 to 10 to extend the payroll tax cut for 160 million American workers and unemployment benefits for 2.3 million people looking for work, and ensure access for 48 million seniors to their doctors. Yet instead voting on this critical bill, Republicans literally walked away from helping middle class Americans. Watch:
Last week, House Republicans had an opportunity to end the political theater and join the President and Congressional Democrats to prevent a tax hike on middle class Americans. Yet instead of working to find a bipartisan compromise, House Republicans offered a bill filled with poison pills that was too extreme to pass the Senate and become law.
As we stop to offer thanks this year, too many Americans are suffering. With the economy continuing to struggle, and the Supercommittee behind us, it’s time for Congress to focus on the number one issue on Americans minds: Jobs.
There is no doubt that creating jobs and growing our economy is America’s top priority.
The fourteen million Americans who are looking for work cannot wait. They are our neighbors, our friends, and our family members. And they deserve the simple dignity that only a job can bring.
Yet over 260 days have passed since the GOP has been in control of the House without a single jobs bill.
