For months now America – and the world – has anxiously watched as Republican leaders in Washington take our nation closer to the brink of a national default in their effort to force the American people to accept their ideological agenda.
Recognizing the special responsibility of our nation to meet its obligations, over twenty years ago, President Ronald Reagan chose a very different path when presented with the need to prevent a default.
For weeks, President Obama and top Congressional Democrats presented Republicans with a historic opportunity to make good on what the GOP pledged to do – cut the deficit.
Yet time and time again, top Republicans have walked away from a deal, pushing our nation closer to default.
Watch the video below for a humorous glimpse into Republican leaders’ not-so-funny negotiating tactics.
Apparently, it’s “turn back the clock” year for House Republicans.
Instead of working to create jobs, the GOP has focused on an ideological agenda that moves us back into the dark ages – almost literally – in terms of the environment and energy efficiency.
Would you be willing to bet your health care coverage on the flip of a coin?
Before Medicare, nearly half of American seniors were forced to go without coverage because insurance companies were reluctant to insure them – making the chances of having health insurance as a senior the same as getting tails on a coin flip.
Today marks the 45th anniversary of the implementation of Medicare. Thanks to Medicare nearly all American seniors now have health care coverage. Additionally, Medicare played a role in dropping the rate of poverty among seniors by nearly 75 percent.
It’s time for Washington Republicans to explain to American families how their plan to give billions in new tax cuts to the wealthiest in the nation while ending Medicare and ignoring the need for jobs is going to help restore our economy. At a time when American middle class families need help, House Republicans are pursuing a hardnosed ideological agenda instead of coming to the table to try to get our nation back to work.
Under the guise of deficit reduction, House Republicans passed a budget that middle class Americans simply cannot afford. Their plan seeks to balance the budget on the backs of America’s seniors, students, and middle class — those who can least afford it. It also would end Medicare as we know it — against overwhelming opposition by the American public. House Democrats offered a plan that cuts the deficit by $1.2 trillion without cutting seniors benefits or the critical investments necessary for economic growth.
