Castle Nugent National Historic Site Establishment Act

The Castle Nugent National Historic Site Establishment Act (H.R. 3726), introduced by Representative Donna Christensen, would preserve the Castle Nugent Historic Site, one of the remaining pristine landscapes of St. Croix.  The bill would preserve 2,900 acres of Caribbean dry forest, extensive coral reef, and substantial black mangrove.  It would also preserve the archaeological remains of indigenous Taino inhabitants and the Danish colonial era.  It is important to save this piece of St. Croix from the kind of development that would limit use by residents.

In 1940, John Lewis was born the son of sharecroppers in rural Alabama. As a youth, he experienced the harsh realities of segregation and racism – forced to sit apart from white children and unable to share the same privileges they did. Today, Lewis is a leader in Congress and recently witnessed the swearing-in of Barack Obama, the first American-American president of the United States. The story of John Lewis is that of the struggle to transform the world of his youth to create the vastly expanded opportunities available today.
