Statement from Chairman Pete Aguilar on Memphis Police Department Footage
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Rep. Pete Aguilar, Chair of the House Democratic Caucus, issued the following statement on the Memphis Police Department's release of video footage surrounding the death of Tyre Nichols:
“As the horrific video out of Memphis is released, House Democrats send our deepest condolences to the loved ones of Tyre Nichols. They deserve to be able to mourn this senseless tragedy in peace and privacy, without the glare of the public eye.
“The Nichols family and the people of Memphis deserve justice. I hope that the felony charges brought against the five officers in Memphis are a step toward ensuring that justice through the legal system.
"As lawmakers, our focus must be on healing and preventing anything like this from happening again. We are committed to the right of all people to peacefully protest and express themselves nonviolently.”
