Chairman Aguilar: House Democrats are ready to get to work on behalf of the American people
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, House Democratic Caucus Chair Pete Aguilar and Vice Chair Ted Lieu held a press conference reaffirming House Democrats’ commitment to Democracy after certifying the 2024 Presidential election.
CHAIRMAN AGUILAR: Yesterday, without incident or controversy, the United States Congress performed our constitutional responsibility to count the electoral votes in the 2024 Presidential Election.
Members of Congress gathered in the House chamber four years ago after a violent mob carrying weapons and ammunition sought to overturn the results of the election while injuring 140 law enforcement officers at the same time. Families spent yesterday mourning loved ones who are no longer with us as a result of that violent mob. Vice President Harris presided over the joint session to certify the results of an election that she lost. She was never pressured to act out of step with her values, and there was never any doubt of what action she might take.
What is meant to be a routine procedural step in the electoral process has now been a day that will live in infamy because one man thought he was above the law and one party enabled him. But there are no election deniers in the House Democratic Caucus. We love our country, whether we win or whether we lose. We believe in our democracy, even though we know it is imperfect. We want to strengthen our institutions so they can't be used to compound inequality or rip people off. We will never give up on building a more perfect union because that's why we ran for Congress in the first place.
After yesterday's commemoration, we're ready to turn the page and to get to work on behalf of the American people. Now, I'll turn it over to House Democratic Caucus Vice Chair Ted Lieu.
VICE CHAIR LIEU: Thank you, Chairman Aguilar, and let me follow up what the Chairman said.
Yesterday, Congress certified the Electoral College results. And you know what we didn't see? We didn't see anyone storm the Capitol. We didn't see a mob attack 140 law enforcement officers. We didn't see anyone incite an insurrection.
President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris and Democrats understand that what makes America great is a peaceful transfer of power. Hopefully, the incoming president will understand that.
Someone I know that understands that is President Jimmy Carter, who will lay in state at the Capitol this week. He was a great man. He was a good man, a graduate of the Naval Academy. He not only was good as president, he did amazing work after he left the presidency. We're all going to miss him. May he rest in peace.
