Statement from Chairman Aguilar on the Supreme Court Striking Down Louisiana’s Congressional Map
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, House Democratic Caucus Chair Pete Aguilar released the following statement:
“For decades, the Voting Rights Act of 1965 has ensured fair representation in our American democracy, giving a voice to communities of color. Today, however, the conservative majority on the Supreme Court handed Donald Trump and his Republican henchmen another victory in their ongoing fight to erode both this landmark legislation and Americans’ civil rights as a whole.
“While this attack on voting rights is nothing new from Republicans, the repercussions of this decision will reverberate not just in Louisiana, but nationwide. I have no doubt that the far-right will use this case to shut out minority voters from our political process, particularly Black voters in the South who have long faced discrimination and marginalization.
“As a representative democracy, we should be working to ensure our government reflects the people we represent. But instead of working to include more Americans in our political process, Republicans have consistently worked to prevent more Americans from voting.
“Democrats will keep fighting back against these attempts to undermine our democracy in the courts, in our communities, and most importantly, at the ballot box. Republicans should not be breathing a sigh of relief today. Make no mistake: their House majority is in danger.”
